The new guidelines for hydrogen systems in the building sector were finalised just in time before Christmas. The transformative effect of hydrogen-based seasonal storage systems, which can make an important contribution to the energy transition, has often been underestimated to date. There has also been a lack of practical guidelines to provide homeowners and approval authorities with clear guidance.

The guide developed under the leadership of the Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS) gGmbH as part of the Portal Green II project closes this gap.

Content and aim of the guideline

The guideline describes:

– The legal requirements for the authorisation of hydrogen systems in buildings.

– The necessary steps in the authorisation process.

It is aimed equally at homeowners who wish to use hydrogen as seasonal storage for their buildings and at the approval authorities that assess the operation of such systems.

Participation and feedback

We at OHS are pleased to contribute to this important guideline. The guide is currently available as a draft version and we would like to invite you to give us your feedback (https://www.grs.de/de/aktuelles/publikationen/entwurf-portal-green-ii-leitfaden-fuer-wasserstoffanlagen-der-technischen). Your suggestions will be incorporated directly into the final version, which will be published in autumn 2025.

With the new guide, we are supporting the path to a more sustainable energy supply. Feel free to share your thoughts and suggestions with us!
