On 14 January 2025, time had finally come: the plant of the ORBIT II funding project moved to its new location at the wastewater treatment plant in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm. The move from its original location at OTH Regensburg marks another important milestone in the mission to promote sustainable energy generation and resource utilisation.

An electrolyser at the centre of innovation

As part of the project, OHS is supplying the electrolyser that produces the hydrogen for biological methanisation. But that’s not all: in addition to hydrogen production, tests are being carried out to see whether the oxygen produced in the process can be used directly in the wastewater treatment plant’s aeration tank. If this is successful, it would not only increase the efficiency of the process, but also demonstrate a further application for utilising the oxygen produced during electrolysis.

Why this step is important

The move to Pfaffenhofen offers ideal conditions for testing the technology under real-life conditions. Wastewater treatment plants can play a central role in the energy and resource transition, and projects such as ORBIT II show how innovative approaches can accelerate this change.
