What is PEM electrolysis and how does it work?
In “Proton Exchange Membrane” or “Polymer Electrolyte Membrane” (PEM) electrolysis, a solid polymer electrolyte is used as a membrane. When an electrical voltage is applied, the water splits. This produces oxygen, positively charged H+ ions (= protons) and free electrons. The H+ ions diffuse through the membrane to the cathode and react with the electrons to form hydrogen.
Which quality of water does the electrolysis require?
The electrolyser only requires drinking water and a power connection. The electrolyser is then ready for operation and produces hydrogen at highest purity across the entire output range from 0-100% nominal output.
Where can hydrogen be used?
The areas of application for hydrogen are very diverse. Hydrogen is used as energy storage for renewable energies, for example, in power-to-gas systems, in industry and in the mobility sector.
